Glorious summer sunshine's good for the soul but not so great for the hair. UV rays can weaken its structural bonds and make it dry, brittle and prone to breakage.
All is not lost! You may need to reconsider your haircare regime so that your hair gets optimal moisture and protection AND here are five extra easy ways to help keep your hair healthy, hydrated and protected.
Ready to take the plunge? Before you swim, drench your hair in fresh water. This dilutes salt and chemicals so that they are less potent and less damaging.
Play it cool. Try giving your hair a final rinse in cool – even cold – water. You'll find it's shinier and less frizzy hair, plus cold water flattens and closes the hair’s cuticles, helping retain moisture and protecting hair from damage. Cold water closes the scalp pores so that roots are held firmly in place, hair sheds less and blood circulation is improved - great for promoting growth and hair health. You’ll feel revitalised, too!
Hat's on. We love a summer hat - there's so much great choice out there and something to suit everyone. A hat or scarf is a brilliant way to protect the hair and scalp from sun damage and colour fade. Just keep one handy for whenever you step out into the sun.
Hang loose. Summer's a great time to experiment with loose, relaxed styles… messy buns, loose braids and pony tails will keep the hair off your neck so you’ll feel cooler. However, avoid tight, pulled-back styles as they can lead to shedding and breakage.
Trim regularly. You’re more likely to suffer from dry and split ends after time in the sun, so regular trims to chop off frizzy splits and keep your hair looking sharp are a must.
